I survived my first public talk since grad school last week. Actually, it felt REALLY good. I wasn't it expecting it to feel that good. Perhaps some of this can be attributed to the boxed wine beforehand, but most likely I think it was the overwhelming feeling of seeing the community gathered at Highline Design to learn about Art & Design in the Flathead.
I grew up here. Let me tell you, it was difficult finding art that was not traditional or western. My first art teacher was a taxidermist moonlighting as an art teacher (or was it the other way around?). We had a few classical art books in the classroom, and he would glue together the pages that showed any nudity (nakedness=shame?). PARTY FOUL. So naturally I went on to learn as much about art as I could, and for me that took form in getting out of the state to travel and get an art education.
I am so thankful for the experience last week and to meet more like minded people. I am hopeful for the future of art in my community and look forward to building off of this foundation. Stay tuned for more on the growth of art in the Flathead Valley.
